As people become tired of shaving, waxing, threading, or plucking their body and facial hair, they look for the best alternative for hair removal. At A New You Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, located in the Chicagoland area, we are often asked about laser hair removal.
These are the 5 most commonly asked questions about laser hair removal in our Orland Park office:
1. What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a hair reduction treatment that uses a laser (beam of light) to destroy the melanin (pigment) in hair follicles leaving little to no hair, or minimal growth. This means shaving will be less frequent.
2. Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
In our experience, many people have described the feeling of laser hair removal as a small rubber band snapping on the skin or a sensation of heat to the skin. The treatment is quick and can often be done in 15-30 minutes depending on the body part. After the treatment, patients have described the sensation of mild sunburn feeling that lasted 1-2 days.
3. What Is The After-Care For Laser Hair Removal?
Laser treatments need specific after-care instructions to ensure optimum results and prevent increased sensitivity to treated areas. Using sunscreen and preventing sun exposure, as well as avoiding tanning beds are the most important rules to follow when starting your laser hair removal journey.
There is no downtime associated with laser hair removal, patients may resume normal activities. Avoid picking or scratching treated skin. Do not use other hair removal treatments during laser treatment such as waxing, plucking, or threading. The only exception is shaving in between laser treatments.
4. What Should I Do To Prepare For My Laser Hair Removal Appointment?
Shaving 24-48 hours before your appointment is recommended. We ask that you not wax, thread, pluck, bleach or get electrolysis for the treatment area for 4 weeks prior to treatment.
On the day of your appointment, you should shower and avoid putting on lotions, body oils, perfumes/ colognes, and deodorants in the areas to be treated.
It is important that you avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks prior to treatment as the laser targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle, tanned skin has extra melanin which attracts laser energy from targeting the hair follicle.
5. Am I A Candidate For Laser Hair Removal?
At A New You Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, located in Orland Park, all skin types with unwanted hair may qualify for laser hair removal! Our laser machine’s technology can treat everyone with hair that is black/ brown in color. Unfortunately, laser hair removal does not currently work on red, blonde, or grey/ white hair.
